Sounds from the World at the 2015 SXSW Music Festival

Every inch of the world and every genre has their influence in SXSW. The festival is a culmination of inspiration from the artists that participate in it. The presence of the Sounds from the World will be bigger felt in Austin, the Live Music Capital of the World.
If you want to grab a taste of the music that the world has to offer, stop by Russian House. Russian House will have world music every night to feed everyone’s appetite for foreign sound. Adding to that, the Austin Convention Center’s Ballroom G will be the home of the International Day Stage from Wednesday, March 18 to Saturday March 21. Japan’s TsuShiMaMiRe, Pakistan’s Mai Dhai, South Korea’s [su:m] and Brazil’s Macaco are just some of the great acts you can expect to see there. The International Day Stage shows are open to Music and Platinum badges and Artist Wristbands.
Flamingo Cantina will host the WOMEX showcase on Thursday, March 19. The bill includes Socalled, who has appeared in numerous recordings as a singer, rapper, pianist and producer. Danay Suarez will bring her versatility to the showcase. As one of Cuba’s trailblazers of its underground rap scene, her success can be attributed to her accessibility to adapt to jazz, hip-hop and reggae, as well as Cuba’s traditional music.
globalFEST will provide the audience an array of talent, both domestic and foreign. Gospel music will have its presence with The Jones Family Singers. The family gospel group hails from Texas’ own Bay City. Pakistani folk band Sain Tanveer Brothers will be performing on the night too. This will all happen on Friday, March 20 at Speakeasy.
Rock Paper Scissors returns for another year with a full line up of bands from around the world including Dominican Republic favorite, Carolina Camacho, Bogota’s global grooves DJ El Freaky and one of Ghana’s reggae stars, Rocky Dawuni. This is another great show at Russian House on Saturday, March 21
FACE will present a Pakistan night at the Victorian Room at the Driskill on Wednesday, March 18. Acts include Meekal Hasan Band, Poor Rich Boy, and Haroon.
Trinidad Jame$ and Shurwayne Winchester will be at Karma Lounge with its Trinidad & Tobago showcase on Saturday, March 21.
Happily returning after a brief hiatus is Nat Geo in conjunction with BalconyTV, with artists such as Grupo Fantasma, K.Flay and gospel greats The Jones Family Singers at Palm Door on Sixth on Thursday, March 19.
You can also get a taste of world music at the Auditorium Shores Stage on Lady Bird Lake on Saturday, March 21 part of a three-day series of free to the public concert series. Compass (Mexican Institue of Sound + Compass), Bomba Estereo and Intocable will be on stage that night.
